To support women during pregnancy and the perinatal period is one of the central tasks of our department of obstetrics and gynecology with an emphasis on support of risk pregnancies. During the prenatal period our hospital offers all modern procedures of prenatal diagnostics and intrauterine therapy. We have a close cooperation with related disciplines such as human genetics, pediatric cardiology, pediatric urology and pediatric surgery.

A further emphasis of our gynaecological service is the treatment of malignancies of the female genital system. All tumors of the uterus, the ovaries and the external genitalia are being treated according to the tumor-stage and the individual needs. We are receiving supra-regional referrals of patients with locally advanced tumors that have spread to other organs like the urinary bladder or the rectum. A multidisciplinary approach for pelvic exenteration is a therapeutical option for patients with advanced disease. Our department is also a  referral center for patients with relapsing disease after irradiation. For these patients innovative techniques like secondary afterloading irradiation for pelvic wall tumors have been established.

For diagnostics and therapy of breast diseases a breast center has been set up. This facility offers the whole range of modern diagnostic and therapeutic techniques as well as counseling for women with a family history of breast cancer. For patients who need a breast biopsy we offer minimal-invasive techniques like the stereotactic Mammotome®-procedure. This biopsy ist performed computerassisted in an outpatient setting. This technique ist very well tolerated and makes an operation with hospitalization often unnecessary. If breastcancer is diagnosed, all modern operative and conservative treatment options are available.

Our new established center of assisted reproduction has pregnancy rates well above the average. In close cooperation with the andrologic department of our department for dermatology and urology we are offering the whole range of therapeutical options for infertile couples. Next to operative adjustment of adhesions and other obstructions we are frequently providing techniques like artificial insemination and hormonal stimulation. All actual techniques of assisted reproduction like IVF and ICSI are being performed.

Patient care

The department of obstetrics and gynecology that has a newly-opened in-patient unit that belongs to the best-equipped wards in Germany (TV, high-speed internet-access etc.), stands for innovative medical treatment embedded  into empathic care. In our area of expertise we are often dealing with eminent experiences in a women’s life like the birth of a child. On the contrary treating infertility or malignant tumors are a part of our assignment. For our medical team it is therefore essential not to treat the disease itself but to also care about the psychological and emotional well-being of our patients.

Research and teaching

A major emphasis of our research is placed on obstetric medicine. We are focussing on premature labor and immunologic implications of pregnant women with and without diabetes, as well as thrombotic risk during pregnancy. Another main focus is fetal medicine, especially ultrasound of the fetal heart.

In the area of gynecologic endocrinology and reproductive medicine research of embryonal maturation and detection of agents causing repeated miscarriages is of major interest.

The training center for gynecologic endoscopy is focussing on minimal-invasive surgery.

The focus of numerous oncological research projects is breastcancer. A special group for basic studies on breast cancer  and genetherapy has international reputation. This institution conducts studies on pharmacotherapy of breastcancer and counsels and supports patients with familial breast and ovarian cancer.
