At the orthopaedic department of the University Hospital Düsseldorf all kinds of diagnostic procedures and therapeutic approaches in acute lesions, acquired degenerative diseases and posttraumatic deformities are available. There is a special interest in paediatric orthopaedics, spine, sports medicine and in joint preserving as well as joint replacing procedures.
In diagnostics, sonography, PC-based digital X-ray technology, instrumented motion and gate analysis are available. CT’s, Magnet resonance tomography, bone scans including PET-scans are performed in specialized centres at our hospital (Department for Diagnostic Radiology).
Most of our patients are treated operatively for which recent technology is available. Out of the whole spectrum of orthopaedic operations surgical corrections of spinal deformities and degenerative diseases, joint preserving osteotomies around the joints as well as partial and total joint replacements and various endoscopic procedures are performed as well as the whole spectrum of paediatric orthopaedic operations..
In addition modern technology of minimal invasive endoscopic surgery and computer-assisted operations for precise osteotomies, osteosynthesis and implantation of total joints are developed.
Patient Care
The building of the orthopaedic department itself has the charm of a completely renovated historical brick stone building with modern medical technology of recent standard in all patient wards as well as in specified units and operation theatres. There are large and bright rooms, rooming-in facilities for the patients and families, special facilities for rehabilitation. There is a digital network for X-rays as well for the out-clinic patient as for all wards allowing the least amount of radiation for the best images, which is of great importance, especially for our paediatric orthopaedic patients.
The operation rooms provide recent technology, computer-assisted surgical devices, modern operation microscope as well as image intensifying systems which all together allow complicated procedures with the highest level of safety for the patient and quality of the result.
Early rehabilitation is of great importance in orthopaedics for which specially trained rehab-personnel is working on the ward as well as for the out-patient in a separate unit.
Research and teaching
In the upper level there are seminar rooms, laboratories and documentation centres as well as doctors ’offices. One of the main interests in science is regenerative medicine and development of biological implants based on stem cell technology and biomaterial research. Other topics are computer assisted surgery along with minimal invasive surgical procedures.
