Patient care

The Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology focuses on diagnosis and treatment of different diseases throughout the body. These include oncologic diseases, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, and trauma. Neuroradiology, pediatric radiology, and female imaging are divisions within the Department.

X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound are available. Only the first two examination methods entail radiation exposure because X-rays are used. However, this level of radiation exposure, specifically at our University Hospital, is low and harmless to health since state-of-the-art equipment is available, operating with considerably lower radiation levels than was the case just a few years ago. Apart from the imaging procedures named above the Department offers PET/CT (positon-emission-tomography / computed tomography) in cooperation with the Department of Nuclear Medicine, a diagnostic imaging modality offering high accuracy in tumor diagnosis and follow-up.

Interventional radiology is another major focus of the Department. Here, radiologists treat vascular and oncologic diseases with minimally-invasive procedures. Some examples of these procedures include dilatation and / or stent application in vascular disease, tumor treatment by catheter-based embolization, interventional occlusion of intracranial aneurysms with coils, or occlusion of trauma-associated bleedin

Research and training

The key research areas of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology include the following:

  • Hybrid Imaging
  • Interventional tumor therapy
  • Imaging of rheumatoid disease
  • Cardiovascular Imaging
  • Female Imaging
  • Imaging of urological disorders
  • Neuroradiology

You will find more information on these research areas on the corresponding links on this webpage. The Department offers different topics for doctoral theses as part of the Medical Research School Düsseldorf.

The Department emphasizes the importance of student education and structured training of its residents and fellows in the different fields of radiology. In student education staff members teach radiological aspects as part of the module-based curriculum at Düsseldorf University. Case-based radiological teaching has been integrated in the medical skills lap for students. The training of its residents and fellows has been organized according to a structures curriculum including daily teaching sessions by one of the staff members and periodical rotation of all residents and fellows.
