About the Region

What is there to do in and around Düsseldorf?

Welcome to Düsseldorf!

Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most densely populated region. When Graf Adolf von Berg declared Düsseldorf a town on August 14, 1288, it only consisted of a single street with a few houses, and had neither a town hall nor a marketplace. The size of the town at that time was 3.75 square kilometres. Today Düsseldorf has a population of approximately 575,000 and covers an area of almost 217 square kilometres. Düsseldorf is a cosmopolitan city and approximately 17% of its residents hold a non-German passport.

The extensive recreational areas, unusual architecture, and vibrant city life in Düsseldorf make it one of the most beautiful, modern, and lively cities in Germany. This sunny city on the Rhine has simply everything. The longest shopping streets, the most innovative sports and leisure activities, among the best party scenes and a vivid cultural life. Art and fashion are Düsseldorf’s main activities.

You will find a number of tips on nature, culture, sports, and shopping on these pages. We’d like to wish you a pleasant stay.
