Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation – Clinical care

In the Clinic for Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Clinical Immunology we routinely perform hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for various diseases utilizing either the patient’s own stem cells (“autologous” transplantation) or stem cells from another individual (“allogeneic” transplantation). Refractory solid tumours including but not limited to stage IV neuroblastoma, multifocal Ewing’s sarcoma, and metastasized or relapsed brain and kidney tumors represent the most prominent indications for high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation. In contrast, patients suffering from high-risk leukemia, myelodysplatic syndrome or inborn errors of the hematopoietic and/or immune system (e.g. thalassemia or severe-combined immunodeficiency) are typical candidates for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. For the care of transplant patients our specialized pediatric oncology and hematology ward is equipped with dedicated patient rooms offering HEPA-filtered air. In addition, the combined adult/pediatric BMT unit provides laminar airflow rooms which are preferentially used for allogeneic transplant procedures
