Workshop: Peer review wissenschaftlicher Artikel (chs Science Track)

Wintersemester 2025/2026 für: (Post-) Doktorand*innen/(wiss.) Mitarbeiter*innen

Time: 9:30-12:30h

Place: online (MS Teams)

Aims: the overall aim of this workshop is to learn how to write a high-quality peer review for international scientific journals.

Detailed objectives include

  • to understand the process of peer review of scientific journals;
  • to gain insight into how to become a peer reviewer and why/how to be a peer reviewer; and
  • to get to know the general structure and approach for a high-quality peer review.

Target group: early career researchers who have little or no experience in writing peer reviews for scientific journals, or researchers with some experience who would like to improve the quality of their own peer reviews.

Framework conditions: The workshop is part of the chs-CAPHRI collaboration (CCC) and will be held in English. It is divided into 3 parts:

1. Homework for preparation (approx. 1-2 hours) After registration (see below), each participant will receive an article with instructions for peer reviewing as well as the manuscript of a ‘real’ scientific article with ‘real’ peer reviews by e-mail. The manuscript must be read thoroughly and a few questions about the peer reviews must be answered. Participants are also welcome to submit their own peer review for discussion during the workshop.

2. Workshop (3 hours) The interactive workshop consists of alternating presentations, discussions, and small group work based on homework. The following topics will be covered:

  • Background and procedure of the peer review process of scientific journals
  • How, why and why one becomes a peer reviewer
  • What to consider before starting a peer review
  • Structure and content of a high-quality peer review
  • General rules as well as do's and dont's of peer reviews

3. Follow-up (approx. 1 hour) After the workshop, participants read important literature to deepen their understanding of the content.

Registration: Please register by e-mail to: Daniel.Kotz@med.uni-duesseldorf.de.
In order to participate in the workshop, it is necessary to prepare a homework assignment (see above).
