Research

The institute's research encompasses the investigation of the mechanisms of biological signal transduction by cytokines in immunological processes and by sirtuins in the aging process.

Using modern investigative methods such as protein biochemistry and protein design, recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, and animal models, the molecular mechanisms and biological consequences of cellular signaling pathways and the molecules involved in them are researched and specifically manipulated.

The insights gained about the molecular control elements of cell functions contribute to our understanding of disease development.

Research focus areas and research groups

  1. The role of cytokines in immune defense (Scheller research group)
  2. Cytokines of the IL-12 family (Floß research group)
  3. Synthetic immunology (Floß and Scheller research groups)
  4. Sirtuins in aging (Piekorz research group)
