Education and Capacity Building
GHIDA provides a unique opportunity for German physicians to complete the clinical rotation required for the subspecialization in tropical medicine. During their stay in Asella, physicians gain hands-on experience with regionally prevalent infectious diseases and actively contribute to clinical care, teaching rounds, seminars, case discussions, and diagnostic supervision. This close integration into the local clinical setting offers valuable global health experience and strengthens both clinical and scientific expertise in tropical medicine.
German medical students are also offered the opportunity to undertake clinical electives, internships, and parts of their final practical year in Asella. In addition, students may conduct a medical doctoral thesis within ongoing clinical and epidemiological reserach projects at GHIDA.
Ethiopian trainees are fully integrated into clinical and research activities, gaining practical experience in the management of infectious diseases relevant to the region. The institute further supports academic development through international training pathways. To date, three Ethiopian researchers have successfully completed the international PhD program of the Faculty of Medicine at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, including extended research stays in Germany. Within the STAIRS program, two additional Ethiopian scientists are currently pursuing PhD studies at Heinrich Heine University and University Hospital Düsseldorf.
