Education and Capacity Building

HITM offers a unique opportunity for German medical doctors to complete a clinical rotation required for the German medical subspecialization in tropical medicine. During these rotations, German physicians gain extensive hands-on experience with regionally prevalent infectious diseases and contribute to clinical teaching through participation in ward rounds, seminars, case discussions, and the supervision of diagnostic procedures. This direct engagement in the local clinical environment provides valuable global health experience and deepens both clinical and scientific understanding of tropical diseases.

German medical students are likewise offered the opportunity to undertake clinical electives, internships, and parts of their final practical year in Asella. In addition, students may conduct a medical doctoral thesis within ongoing clinical and epidemiological studies at HITM.

Ethiopian trainees are actively integrated into ongoing clinical and epidemiological research projects, enabling them to gain hands-on experience in managing infectious diseases prevalent in the region. In addition, the institute supports the academic advancement of Ethiopian scientists through international degree programs. To date, three Ethiopian researchers have successfully completed the international PhD program of the Faculty of Medicine at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, including extended research stays in Germany. Furthermore, within the framework of the STAIRS program, two additional Ethiopian scientists are currently pursuing their PhD studies at Heinrich Heine University and the University Hospital Düsseldorf.
