The Global Health Group Düsseldorf is an interdisciplinary clinical and academic group that brings together expertise in infectious diseases, tropical and travel medicine, public health, clinical research, and international health cooperation. Its activities combine research, clinical care, capacity building, and policy-related work in Germany and internationally.

Research activities cover imported and tropical infectious diseases, including malaria and arboviral infections, high-consequence infectious diseases (HCID), and travel medicine. The Group also contributes to clinical guidelines and works closely with national institutions and professional societies, including the Robert Koch Institute and the German Society for Tropical Medicine.

Internationally, the Group collaborates with clinical and academic partners worldwide, contributes to multinational research networks and international missions, and supports outbreak preparedness and response, including through University Hospital Düsseldorf’s partnership in the WHO Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) and collaboration with the Robert Koch Institute. Academic partnerships include reciprocal exchanges of students and researchers. 

A central hub of these activities is the Global Health Institute Düsseldorf–Arsi (GHIDA), a joint initiative of University Hospital Düsseldorf and Arsi University in Ethiopia, established in 2026. Together with the Hirsch Institute for Tropical Medicine, GHIDA provides a platform for collaborative international research and capacity development. The Group participates in and coordinates multinational research networks focusing on HIV, tuberculosis, and sepsis, with antimicrobial resistance as an important cross-cutting theme.

Further research areas include chronic liver diseases and associated complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as other locally relevant non-communicable diseases, including esophageal cancer. We consider molecular and other innovative methods central to improving diagnosis, prognostic assessment, and clinical management.

By linking clinical expertise, research, education, and long-term international partnerships, the Global Health Group Düsseldorf aims to strengthen sustainable collaboration and improve health outcomes across borders.
