Welcome to the Institute of Neuropathology of the University Hospital Düsseldorf!

Neuropathology is concerned with the diagnosis and scientific investigation of diseases of the nervous system and skeletal muscles. The Institute of Neuropathology in Duesseldorf is one of the largest institutions of its kind in Germany.

Our scientific focus is to understand the molecular causes of diseases of the central nervous system diseases, in particular brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and prion disease, and neuropsychiatric disorders, and to develop novel approaches for improved diagnostics and treatment of these diseases.

In our diagnostic work, we analyse tissue samples from neurosurgical operations, stereotactic biopsies, biopsies of skeletal muscles and peripheral nerves, vascular biopsies, skin and colorectal biopsies as well as cerebrospinal fluid specimens. We also perform clinical and forensic autopsies. Besides conventional histological techniques, we regularly use state of the art methods of histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology for diagnostic purposes. More information about the staff of our institute, our scientific interests and diagnostic work, and our teaching activities for students and doctoral researchers is available via these web pages.
