Diagnostic and interventional sonography
We work at the intersection of innovative ultrasound diagnostics and cutting-edge clinical medicine. Our goal is to continuously advance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in gastroenterology through more precise, less invasive, and smarter imaging techniques.
Research focus
Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of the liver
A key focus of our research is contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), particularly its role in the differential diagnosis of focal liver lesions.
As liver lesions often require precise and timely characterization, CEUS offers a radiation-free, dynamic alternative to, or valuable complement to, standard cross-sectional imaging techniques such as CT and MRI. We investigate how diagnostic accuracy can be further improved through innovative contrast-enhanced protocols and advanced ultrasound technologies, enabling us to provide our patients with tailored answers in a timely manner.
Collaboration with the working-group Artificial Intelligence (Hohmann, Seraphin)
To unlock the full potential of modern medical imaging, we are exploring new approaches. At the heart of our work is a close collaboration with the Artificial Intelligence Research Group (Tobias Seraphin and Janik Hohmann).
By leveraging state-of-the-art AI algorithms and machine learning techniques, we develop and evaluate automated analysis tools for ultrasound data. These advanced algorithms enable more objective assessment of tissue structures, real-time pattern recognition, and optimal support for physicians in making complex diagnostic decisions.
Ongoing Projects
- AI-assisted characterization of focal liver lesions using CEUS: Development and clinical validation of algorithms for the automated classification of benign and malignant liver lesions.
- AI-assisted detection of focal liver lesions: Segmentation of ultrasound videos to detect focal liver lesions.
- Comparison of modern ultrasound techniques: Benefits of SMI (broadband Doppler) and CEUS in the characterization of focal liver lesions, as well as analyses of the learning curve for both techniques and diagnostic accuracy as a function of user experience.
- Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (DCE-US): Use of quantitative perfusion analysis to evaluate the therapeutic response of focal liver lesions to modern anticancer drugs.
- Ultrasound in rare infectious and liver diseases: Retrospective analysis of a large cohort of patients with cystic echinococcosis.
