PSC, Chronic Inflammation and Biliary Carcinogenesis
Research Focus
- Translational research on primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), its natural history and disease-associated complications
- Chronic biliary inflammation and immune-mediated tissue remodeling as drivers of dysplasia and cholangiocarcinoma
- Molecular risk stratification and early detection of PSC-associated cholangiocarcinoma using liquid biopsies, targeted sequencing and DNA methylation biomarkers
- Spatial characterization of inflammatory and premalignant biliary lesions
- Patient-reported outcomes, quality of life, fatigue and physical activity in individuals with PSC
- Development of patient-centered and non-pharmacological interventions for chronic cholestatic liver disease
The research group focuses on primary sclerosing cholangitis as a model of chronic inflammation-driven carcinogenesis. Our overall aim is to better understand the transition from chronic biliary inflammation to dysplasia and cholangiocarcinoma and to translate these insights into improved risk stratification, cancer surveillance and patient-centered care.
