The Hirsch-Institute of Tropical Medicine in Asella, Ethiopia, is supported by a dedicated and interdisciplinary team. It is headed by Prof. Torsten Feldt, MD, director of the institute and a long-standing expert in the field of infectious medicine and tropical diseases. He is supported on site by Ass. Prof. Dr. Tafese B. Tufa, who, as co-director, is responsible for scientific coordination on site. Denise Rabl, resident physician and scientific coordinator, also supports the institute’s operational and organizational processes. She served as the on-site coordinator in Asella during 2024/25. In 2025, Dr. Pascal Massion took over the local coordination for one year. 

In addition, the institute's team consists of around 20 qualified employees who work in the areas of laboratory, administration, research, and local project support. Regular internal and external training courses ensure that all team members are able to work at the cutting edge of science and technology.
