Laboratory and Institutional Infrastructure

GHIDA operates within a modern facility designed to support advanced clinical care, diagnostics, research, and training. The building includes treatment rooms, specialized laboratories, office space, and a fully equipped seminar and training room. Continuous operation is ensured through dedicated infrastructure, including service vehicles, an independent water tower, and a backup generator for water and electricity supply.

Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory
At the core of GHIDA is its state-of-the-art molecular diagnostics laboratory equipped with advanced technologies, including:

  • RT-PCR (Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction)
  • GeneXpert System
  • Gel Electrophoresis
  • Oxford Nanopore Sequencing

These platforms enable high-impact applications such as HIV drug resistance testing, rapid pathogen detection, cell-free DNA metagenomic analysis for rapid sepsis diagnosis, and real-time outbreak investigation.

Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Platform
GHIDA maintains a flexible, on-siteNGS platform based on Oxford Nanopore Technologies, enabling real-time genomic surveillance and precision diagnostics.

  • Real-time whole-genome sequencing of viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens
  • Rapid outbreak investigation and transmission tracking
  • Amplicon sequencing for targeted genomic regions (e.g., HIV drug resistance mutations, AMR markers)
  • Metagenomic and cell-free DNA sequencing
  • Portable sequencing workflows for field and low-resource settings
  • Bioinformatics pipelines for genome assembly, variant analysis and phylogenetics

This platform positions GHIDA as a regional center for rapid genomic surveillance and infectious disease outbreak response.

Clinical Microbiology Laboratory
The clinical microbiology laboratory includes a BAC/ALERT automated blood culture system for the detection of bloodstream infections and high-quality bacterial isolation. It also provides antimicrobial resistance profiling to guide targeted therapy.

Parasitology Unit

  • The parasitology unit performs in vitro malaria culture and diagnostic concentration and staining techniques for a range of parasitic infections, including Cryptosporidium.

Hematology and Clinical Chemistry
Comprehensive testing is available to assess organ function, support diagnosis, and monitor disease progression and treatment response.

Immunology and Hormonal Diagnostics

  • Advanced immunoassay testing is performed using the Roche COBAS e 411 analyzer, enabling high-performance diagnostics for hormones, infectious markers, and immune-related parameters.

Overall impact
With its integrated diagnostic platforms, advanced sequencing capabilities, and skilled multidisciplinary team, GHIDA serves as a regional center of excellence for infectious disease diagnostics, training, genomic surveillance, and translational research. Its combined clinical and laboratory workflows strengthen local capacity and contribute to improved patient care and high-impact scientific output.
