Side Visit of the STAIRS Telemedicine Project in Addis Abeba
As part of the STAIRS telemedicine initiative, a joint site visit and implementation workshop were conducted at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa with Dr. Wiltrud Abels and Dr. Hélène David from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, together with the GHIDA team. The workshop focused on implementing a sustainable telemedicine consultation network linking Charité Berlin, tertiary referral hospitals in Addis Ababa, and regional hospitals such as Asella and Bokoji.
During the visit, telemedicine infrastructure was evaluated, multidisciplinary workflows were discussed, and training sessions were held with local clinical teams to support the integration of virtual consultations into routine patient care. The initiative aims to strengthen both North–South and South–South collaboration by enabling remote specialist consultations, improving antimicrobial stewardship and critical care management, facilitating timely referral decisions, and promoting continuous knowledge exchange between referral centers and peripheral hospitals.
