Ultrasound and Endoscopic training performed by Prof. Mark Oette

Prof. Mark Oette dedicated four weeks of his time to support medical education and patient care in Ethiopia. During his visit, he organized intensive ultrasound and gastrointestinal endoscopy workshops for local physicians, which were met with great appreciation and enthusiasm by the Ethiopian colleagues. Owing to the success of the training, further workshops are already planned for 2027.

The initiative is particularly important in view of the increasing burden of esophageal cancer and liver malignancies in Ethiopia, where expanding endoscopic and ultrasound expertise is essential for earlier diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.

In addition, Prof. Oette brought donated endoscopic equipment and accessories collected from surrounding hospitals in Germany. These donations enabled the local team to perform therapeutic endoscopic procedures for esophageal and gastric tumors, as well as ERCP interventions, thereby substantially expanding treatment options for patients at Asella Referral and Teaching Hospital.
