Telemedicine project as part of STAIRS
As part of the STAIRS project, the Institute for Tropical Medicine and Charité Berlin worked closely together to procure the necessary hardware and software for setting up a telemedicine infrastructure in Asella and Addis Ababa.
In July 2025, Dr. Wiltrud Abels from Charité Berlin and the HITM team carried out the first implementation phase. IPads and mobile stands were installed, and training courses were held in the intensive care and emergency departments of Asella Referral and Teaching Hospital and the intensive care unit of St. Paul's Hospital in Addis Ababa. The final delivery of the devices took place in August 2025. This was followed by a second round of training by the HITM team and the first test phase in collaboration with Charité Berlin.
The aim of the project is to enable peripheral hospitals to contact experts at Charité Berlin or larger clinics in their own country at an early stage – for example, for medical consultations in the field of antimicrobial stewardship (ABS) or intensive care medicine. At the same time, this allows transfer requests for critically ill patients to be made in good time.
