Erschließung, Digitalisierung und Erforschung von medizinischen Dissertationen – rechtliche Herausforderungen [Dissify]

Indexing, digitization, and research of medical dissertations – legal challenges [Dissify]

Despite their academic significance, many historical medical dissertations remain difficult to access. This not only hampers contemporary research, but also limits the visibility and recognition of their original authors. To address this gap, an interdisciplinary pilot project focuses on the digitisation, legal assessment, and cataloguing of medical dissertations from the Baltic Sea region between 1880 and 1950.

Research objectives

  • Development of a prototype for the automated identification of authors’ dates of death
  • Assessment of the research potential of digitised dissertations for the history of science
  • Preparation of a legal opinion on the comprehensive use of European dissertations, including their application in AI models

The project aims to make digitised dissertations accessible in a legally compliant and sustainable manner, particularly in light of current developments in artificial intelligence and large language models. A key priority is the enrichment of relevant metadata, especially to clarify copyright status through the identification of authors’ dates of death.

Networks and Prospects

The project is embedded in a broader network of pilot initiatives and maintains active exchange with the academic community. Its findings are intended not only to support other institutions through the development of practical guidelines, but also to lay the groundwork for a future European platform for doctoral theses.

In the long term, the project seeks to enhance the digital accessibility of historical doctoral theses and to restore their visibility and relevance within the research community.
